α-Synuclein Deposition in Sympathetic Nerve Fibers in Genetic Forms of Parkinson’s Disease

Individuals with SNCA, DJ-1, LRRK2, or GBA mutations have substantial intraneuronal α-syn deposition in sympathetic noradrenergic nerves in skin biopsies, whereas those with biallelic PRKN mutations do not. Biallelic PRKN patients may have mildly increased α-syn deposition compared with control subjects. © 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. CLICK TO REVIEW

Deciphering and manipulating the epigenome for the treatment of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease

This narrative review aimed to elaborate on the potential epigenomic treatments for PD and AD. About 199 scientific articles written in English, which reported on novel epigenomic-based treatment for PD and AD, were selected for this review from the PubMed database. Full articles and relevant data were extracted. Treatments targeting DNA methylation or miRNAs appear

Identification of leaky gut-related markers as indicators of metabolic health in Dutch adults: The Nutrition Questionnaires plus (NQplus) study

Biomarkers that link a leaky gut and subsequent bacterial translocation to metabolic health were identified in this study. Especially zonulin may aid in monitoring a leaky gut and detecting individuals at risk for developing chronic metabolic diseases. CLICK TO REVIEW

Retinal thickness and microvascular pathway in Idiopathic Rapid eye movement sleep Behaviour Disorder and Parkinson’s disease

In PD and iRBD patients retina was thinner than HCs, and values of iRBD were between PD and HCs. Moreover, in iRBD, a peculiar microvascular pattern has been found, characterized by a higher vascularization of the deep capillary plexus. Our findings suggest that retina might be considered a biomarker of neurodegeneration in iRBD, easily estimable

Dietary bioactive compounds as modulators of mitochondrial function

In the last years, it has been consistently reported that the modulation of mitochondrial function represents one of the mechanisms behind the bioactive compounds-dependent health improvements. In this review, we focus on gathering, summarizing, and discussing the evidence that supports the effect of dietary bioactive compounds on mitochondrial activity and the relation of these effects

Design of synthetic human gut microbiome assembly and butyrate production

Guided by the model, we identify constraints on butyrate production by high species richness and key molecular factors driving butyrate production, including hydrogen sulfide, environmental pH, and resource competition. In sum, our model-guided approach provides a flexible and framework for understanding and accurately predicting community assembly and metabolic functions. CLICK TO REVIEW

MIND and Mediterranean Diets Associated with Later Onset of Parkinson’s Disease

This cross-sectional study found a strong correlation between age of onset of PD and dietary habits, suggesting that nutritional strategies may be an effective tool to delay PD onset. Further studies may help to elucidate potential nutrition-related sex-specific pathophysiological mechanisms and differential prevalence rates in PD. CLICK TO REVIEW
